Proportional Representation and Female Parliamentarians.
- Authors
Salmond, Rob
- Abstract
The article aims to discuss how electoral systems affect the proportion of women in legislatures. It provides an updated nonlinear theory of female representation, an improved dataset on women's representation across space and time, and modern statistical techniques used in assessing the impact on women's participation in politics. A panel dataset covering 21 advanced industrialized democracies over a period of about 50 years was used by the authors in order to address the issue. It also correlates female legislative representation on electoral rules.
