- Title
Writing as Fishing: Conceptual Metaphor and "Resonance" in a Story by Hemingway and a Poem by Wordsworth.
- Authors
Melnick, Burton
- Abstract
A literary critique is presented which utilizes conceptual metaphor to shed light on the nature of what the author calls resonant literary texts. The conceptual metaphor "the mind is a body of water" and its entailment "writing is fishing" are examined in light of the short story "Big Two-Hearted River" by Ernest Hemingway and the poem "Resolution and Independence" by William Wordsworth. The article discusses the devices through which the two texts suggest that their narratives are of more import than meets the eye, as well as the unconscious presence of conceptual metaphor, which allows the narratives to resonate without turning into simple allegory. Also addressed is how the works are enhanced by the Christian associations of fish and fishing.
