- Abstract
Difficulties of the problematic. Are knowers obliged to communicate their knowledge? Spontaneously we say that they are, as it would seem to be human nature to communicate knowledge, while hiding the truth strikes us as unnatural. St. Augustine, however, in his uneasiness with the human problematic (St. Thomas would follow his lead), states that it is not the same to lie as to conceal the truth. Lying is always morally bad, but it is often justifiable to simply conceal the truth. Several cases are presented to point out the difference, as well as the situation in which silence takes preference over stating the truth.
