- Title
What Education in GIS for Town Planners? A Tunisian Experience.
- Authors
Turki, Sami Yassine
- Abstract
Future town planners should possess technical knowledge as users of geographical information systems (GIS) as well as certain skills in designing spatial databases and in spatial analysis. They also should understand GIS not only as a tool to be used in their work but also as part of an approach to organize urban planning and management. A Tunisian institute for urban-planning education has developed an approach to GIS education in which students progress through six levels over a sixyear training period. The progression corresponds to the sequence of activities performed by urban planners and highlights the roles of GIS in each activity. At the highest levels, GIS is considered not only as an efficient tool for spatial analysis but also as a way to define and assess urban policies.
