- Abstract
The article describes the developments in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies used in secondary schools in North America and Great Britain. It recounts the history of GIS implementation, including the launch of the first desktop GIS application by MapInfo in 1986 and the developments of the AEGIS, a GIS framework made for classroom use by the Advisory Unit for Micro-technology in Education of Great Britain. Also discussed is the use of GIS in the professional development of geography teachers.
