- Abstract
This article informs that the first group of students to arrive on the campus of the University of Oregon in the Fall of 1876 soon met to form two debating societies, one for men and one for women; they were joined by a third, for men only, in 1893. The immediate success of these debating societies illustrates that the educational environment was favorable to public speaking from the beginning of the university. were taught, all students had weekly exercises in composition or declamation. This concern for speech training resulted in the in the hiring of the first speech teacher in the state, a Professor of Elocution, in 1879.
