The article analyzes the problems confronting Hamlet, the main character in William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet," by asking why he is aroused to react in turn with fear, desire, contempt and disgust towards Gertrude, Ophelia and the Ghost. The article notes that Hamlet's problematic relations with the other three characters may be re-imagined in his horrified new knowledge of them primarily as figures of abjection.
