- Abstract
As a result of the serious economic and financial crisis affecting the country, Portugal was forced, on April 6, 2011, to submit a bailout request to the European Commission. In this context, on May 17, 2011, the Portuguese Government and the troika, composed of the IMF, ECB and EU, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on Specific Economic Policy Conditionality, which, among other aspects, set to approve legislation leading to significant changes to the employment market. Tackling the rising unemployment rate, making the labor relations more flexible and the need to cut down public expenditures and reduce the companies’ production costs are among the goals of the ongoing reform. With this article, we intend to give notice of new labor and social security legislation that has been implemented and provide a critical review of such measures
