- Abstract
If we transform an idea presented by Jürgen Osterhammel into a metaphor, the 19th century can be described as a sandwich, with a Victorian beef in the middle, and two very long turns of centuries representing the slices of bread. The history of the nobility can be a means of exploring the beef. The essay explains this argument by describing the re-invention and re-structuring of nobilities in Germany in the middle of the 19th century after a time of transformation and crisis around "1800". If we interpret the 19th century from the middle - and not from the end or the beginning, as German historians tend to do - its essence becomes clearer. The 19th century is more than the only way of getting from the 18th to the 20th century, from tradition to modernity. The "reconstitution of social hierarchies" (Bayly) turns out to be an important characteristic.
