- Abstract
A recent research article published in Angewandte Chemie by David Margulies et al. introduces a bifunctional molecule that facilitates communication between proteins in natural cells. This synthetic regulatory unit (sRU) converts the activity of glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3) into an activable enzyme through the use of an unnatural protein effector called lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA). The expression of LDHA is dependent on cellular hypoxic response, resulting in the unnatural dependence of GSK-3 activity on oxygen levels.
