- Abstract
The article presents an acoustical analysis of English vowels produced by Dutch, Chinese and American speakers. A research is conducted wherein the Chinese, Dutch and American English vowel system is analyzed, both in the details of their position within the articulatory vowel space and in the number of vowels in the inventory using acoustic measurements such as the Praat speech processing software. The pronunciation of English by Chinese speakers are characterized as opposed to Dutch-accented English. The study found out that Chinese learners have a distorted conception of the American-English vowel system and Dutch speakers have better acoustical separation of English vowel tokes.
