- Abstract
Markopaşa, with its affiliated publishing organs under different names and as siblings, is a socialist realist weekly political humor magazine issued between 1946-1950. It is a groundbreaking publication of the period, with its humorous opposition. Türkiye, of its time, is in transition to a multi-party system and changes in economic, political, and sociological terms. Markopaşa dwells upon this change as the "public tribune". This article deals with Markopaşa's perspective on class formations, contradictions, and forms of exploitation within Turkish society through content analysis. It first examines the reflections of Türkiye's structural change on its class dynamics. Second, it analyzes class groups not crystallized yet, but, as Markopaşa identifies, based on the distinction between "downstairs" and "upstairs", together with their living strategies and conditions. In Markopaşa's view, Türkiye of the period undergoes a change in which capital accumulation strategies are unconditionally embraced as a national goal and the political mechanism imposes thick limits on democracy, freedoms, and social justice. It is a change that reinforces the privileges and deepens the exploitation. In this picture, those in the common ground of "downstairs" appear in various forms of poverty, hindered from participation and inclusion. This proposal, finally, opens up a discussion of the historical accumulation of the social dynamics formed/re-formed at that time, extending to today's Türkiye.
