- Abstract
Proverbs are vital for purposes of cultural and literary heritage because they give real and more reliable information pertaining to a nation's lifestyle, culture, artifacts/material, spirituality, and worldview. The Turkish and Egyptians share common histories, associations, social ties, and cultural relations emanating from time immemorial. Owing to this phenomenon, there are proverbs between Turkish and Egyptian cultures that are congruent/similar to each other in terms of both meaning and usage. Being cognizant of the definitions and usage relations of these proverbs correctly will reveal how much the Egyptian and Turkish nations lived together in culture, thought, tradition and custom, belief, and lifestyle. Arabic proverbs have been discussed in many Turkish-Arabic proverbs studies. However, when most of these studies are reviewed, there are two critical points that draw our attention; Firstly, most of this work is on proverbs in Classical Arabic and does not deal with proverbs in Modern Arabic dialects. Secondly, in the studies in question, it has been deduced that the Turkish equivalents of Arabic proverbs are usually translations or explanations, and few Arabic proverbs are met with Turkish proverbs. The aim of this study is to reveal the richness of the proverbs of the two nations (Turkey and Egypt) by comparing and contrasting the Egyptian proverbs vs Turkish proverbs, giving the Turkish equivalence of the Egyptian proverbs, and contributing to the studies on their translations into Turkish. For this purpose, 60 proverbs have been selected without being bound by certain conditions from the study called "al-Amthal al-'ammiyya" (Colloquial proverbs), which was prepared by Ahmad Taymour Pasha in 1956, and has the feature of being the most important study written on Egyptian proverbs.
