- Authors
FOSBURY, TIMOTHY L.
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the 1731 English play "London Merchant: Or, the History of George Barnwell" by George Lillo is presented. It analyzes the play within the context of the ballad "The Ballad of George Barnwell," the prose tale "The 'Prentice's Tragedy" and the novel "George Barnwell" by T. S. Surr. In order to advocate for the understanding of virtuous subjectivity in different versions of the Barnwell story, the article looks back changes in how the story is mediated across two centuries.
