- Abstract
Site selection of some airports is made on the land acquired from the sea because of absence of land inhighly populated, low surface orbarriers. These infill airports located in three places in the world are Kansai Airport in Japan, Hong Kong Airport and Ordu-Giresun Airport, Turkey. The environmental impacts of infill airports are multifaceted. These are: environmental pollution caused by the supply and transportation of materials which damage the sea area through sandpulling activities to create the infill area at sea. Also; there are serious environmental problems such as destruction of marine habitat, decrease in flora and fauna, increase in sea water temperature due to pollution, and triggering of coastal erosion. In this study, a comparison was made on the effects of physical environment and biodiversity in order to demonstrate the environmental impact of infill airports. This comparison is built with data sources that will determine the effects on emissions, pollution and marine ecology. The environmental impacts of Hong Kong Airport and Ordu-Giresun Airport as case areas, have been discussed, and suggestions have been given.
