- Abstract
The article presents information on the Xarifa expedition to the Indian Ocean led by scientist Hans Hass with coral scientist Georg Scheer and nematologist S. A. Gerlach. The expedition was started on October 15, 1957 to explore the atolls and reefs of the Indian Ocean including Maldives and Nicobar Islands. Xarifa was a three-masted sailing schooner used for the scientific expeditions. Remote observation of underwater sites was the focus of the expedition. The underwater discoveries of coral reefs opened new ways for the geographical researches.
