The bony skull (cranium) consists of up to 30 bones and can be anatomically divided into two large parts: the facial skull (viscerocranium) and the cerebral skull (neurocranium). The viscerocranium comprises the bones that form the face; the cranium those that house the brain. Cranial sutures and the so-called fontanelles between the bones. On the underside of the skull are the inner and outer skull bases, which are characterized by passageways for nerves, arteries and veins.
