- Abstract
In this study, we will question the idea conveyed by the notion of Nature in the 17th century and the use made of it by Racine, one of the greatest playwrights of the Grand Siècle. Although the word nature cannot be considered, from the point of view of lexical statistics, a key word within the racinian tragedy, the voice of nature becomes a source of pathos and tragedy, especially at the level of the plays inspired by mythological sources. The racinian characters evoke nature to ward off the threats of violence and fatality that plague them and their families. The voice of nature, which symbolizes the voice of blood, is above all the voice of the impotence of a central character of the family unit, that of the mater dolorosa, who delights in a murmur or in a cry in the classical sense of the word.
