The article discusses the looting of art from Venice, Italy by French troops in 1797 during the War of the First Coalition. Topics include the French occupation of Venice after the May 12, 1797 abdication of the Great Council of the Republic of Venice and the Treaty of Milan in which representatives of the former Venetian Republic agree to give Napoleon Bonaparte three million lire, books, and paintings of his choice in war reparations.
