The article focuses on the project by engraver John Landseer that examined the Old Masters' depictions of big cats, published as the 1823 handbook "Twenty Engravings of Lions, Tigers, Panthers and Leopards." Topics discussed include collaboration with his son Thomas and animal painter Edgar Ashe Spilsbury, examination of the painting "Daniel in the Lions' Den" by Peter Paul Rubens, and the artists' training in the tabular investigation of animals to understand the anatomy of their subjects.
