- Abstract
The article discusses the seventeenth-century British pirate known as Captain William Kidd. It considers his career as a privateer; provides an account of his arrest, trial, and execution; and explores references to Kidd and his treasure in popular culture including the 1724 book " A General History of the Pyrates" by Captain Johnson, the excavation of a silver bar attributed to Kidd's treasure off the coast of Madagascar, and the 1950s hoax of a treasure map identifying the treasure in the South China Seas region.
