Divorce decree nisi granted by the court to Simpson to be able to marry King Edward VIII; Contention of Stanley Baldwin, the Conservative prime minister of the National Government, that Simpson could not become queen; Decision of Edward to abdicate and marry Simpson; Skepticism about the effectiveness of a divorce law.
