- Abstract
This text returns to the thesis and research carried out in settlements and encampments in the state of Goiás in the early 2000s to understand why people struggle for land or "the meaning of land," analyzing social practices, representations, and reappropriation of values and the construction of habitus in the struggle for land, within the context of social, economic, political, and cultural transformations of western modernity. These reflections were founded in the ideas advanced by Pierre Bourdieu, and revealed habitus, representations, and social practices forged in these encampments and settlements. Participation in struggles and the land (whether dreamed about or attained) produce new representations and resignifications of social identity, constituting social processes and agents to "recreate" the world and "reinvent" society in the Brazilian countryside.
