- Abstract
The article presents views and insights of the author on the issues and problems affecting supportive housing for the aged in the U.S. Significantly, older people need affordability, accessibility, and acceptability in the place where they live. The author clarifies the definitions of senior housing and age-segregated housing. The general reluctance to live in housing with services is partially related to the desire to conserve financial resources. Housing-and-services options typically come a package deal, with a minimum set of basic services. Such settings that combine housing and services typically have services available at any time. Finally, much of the coming crisis is the result of a maladaptive system with a lack of viable options for financing long-term care.
