Prescription writing and record keeping requirements for a veterinary practitioner.

- Abstract
Veterinary practitioners must maintain accurate records relating to medicines they dispense and administer. Prescriptions granted by a vet in respect of animals under his/her care must have a serial number and bear the following details, authorised name of animal remedy (+ VPA number - unless fully dispensed); quantity, date issued, manner and site of administration, dose rate, withdrawal period, description of animals, name and address of client, period of validity of 'script'; special instructions, precautions, risks; and name, address and signature of the registered veterinary practitioner. Since the new Animal Remedies Regulations (S.I. 786 of 2007 and S.I. 182 of 2009) were signed into Irish law, Veterinary Ireland has had meetings with the Department of Agriculture, Marnie and Food to discuss practical ways in which vets could comply with the record keeping requirements thereby keeping the paperwork to a manageable level. Throughout the discussions the main emphasis from Veterinary Ireland has been to keep the burden of record keeping (electronic or hard copy) to a workable minimum whilst always upholding the highest standards of animal care and welfare.
