- Abstract
The term 'connectivity' has come under the spotlight in international politics. Its growing salience can be measured through numerous connectivity projects across the world, as major powers are trying to expand their geostrategic reach to relatively untapped regions. In this context, the Eurasian region has emerged as a hotspot for geopolitical competition, given its vast stretch from Eastern Europe to Central Asia region. Located in the Heart of Eurasia, Central Asia for long has remained least connected owing to its rugged mountainous terrain. However, its rich energy and mineral reserves have attracted the interests of regional players like China, Russia, the European Union, and India who are pushing their respective connectivity strategies to make way for easy access to the region. The article looks at the major connectivity-related initiatives in the region such as China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), India's International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), Russia's Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Greater Eurasian Partnership and EU's Central Asia Strategy 2019. It analyses the strategic objectives of these actors, prospects of cooperation, and constraints toward greater connectivity in the region.
