The author discusses brief history and developments in the study of Balkan and South Slavic linguistics in the U.S. and Canada. Topics explored include the significant contributions of linguist Roman Jakobson to the Slavic curricula in both private and state institutions, the publication of Horace Lunt's "A Grammar of the Macedonian Literary Language," and the subjects addressed by South Slavic linguists which ranged from political science to anthropology.
