- Abstract
The article presents an examination of the local interests that helped shape the development of the Balkans, in the face of outside imperialist ambitions, during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It examines the Eastern Question on a regional basis and explores how Italian, Austro-Hungarian, British, French, Russian and Ottoman struggles influenced local decisions made throughout the Balkans and reexamines the role of nationalism in the events of the 19th and 20th centuries.
