- Abstract
The article discusses various folklore stories on vampires in Europe. It notes evidence for the first appearance of vampires among the Slavs in the Bulgarian Empire during the 10th century A.D. It outlines the primary Slavic and non-Slavic words for vampire, and explores the most common misconceptions regarding the history of vampires. The author also examines the mistaken connection of the literary character Dracula to prince Vlad III. It also includes information on the murder of a daughter by her mother in Romania.
