- Abstract
The expression of mourning, which varies from culture to culture, is generally associated with figures of grief, tears, dressing in black, etc. However, from the perspective of the psychic, mourning may present itself in non-traditional ways, since laughter and euphoria may also be signs of mourning. Following Freud's ideas regarding the melancholy access triggered by loss, it is possible to recognize that mania is hosted in the center of melancholy, as another mode of pathological mourning. If the subject identifies with the ideal-ego, mourning will take its manic form, whereas if the subject identifies with the ego-ideal, it will take on its melancholic form, and there may be shifts from one to the other.
