- Abstract
This article discusses the importance of Lelio Colista, a composer from Rome, in the development of instrumental music before the arrival of Corelli. Colista was a prominent lutenist, teacher, and composer who performed for influential patrons and participated in large-scale performances in major churches in Rome. The article presents a collection of Colista's 26 trio sonatas, which were written throughout his career and demonstrate his unique style characterized by motivic interrelationships and rhythmic transformations. The editor of the collection, Antonella D'Ovidio, provides a comprehensive biography of Colista and addresses the issue of misattributions in previous publications. The article also highlights the popularity of Colista's sonatas in England and their influence on Henry Purcell. However, there are some textual issues in the edition that may need correction. Overall, this edition of Colista's sonatas is a valuable contribution to the understanding and performance of 17th-century instrumental music.
