- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between newspaper publisher and political activist Monroe Sweetland and Japanese Americans, particularly within the context of World War II. It comments on Sweetland's service as field director of the American National Red Cross in the Central Pacific region and his relationship with Japanese American soldier Frank Hachiya, who he met on Eniwetok Atoll. The author considers anti-Japanese sentiment in Oregon, particularly in the Hood River Valley, and Japanese American internment. Sweetland's work with the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) is also addressed.
