- Abstract
The article discusses the potential benefits of increasing the population in regional areas of Australia. It highlights the historical preference for regional Australia and the shift towards urbanization in recent decades. The article presents a study by the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) that examines different settlement patterns and their economic implications. The study suggests that concentrating population growth in major metropolitan areas may lead to issues such as congestion and high living costs. On the other hand, dispersing population growth to regional cities and more distant communities could provide economic benefits and improve affordability and quality of life. The RAI has developed the Regionalisation Ambition, a framework aimed at increasing the population in regional Australia to 11 million people by 2032. The article emphasizes the need for strategic planning, collaboration between various stakeholders, and government support to achieve these goals. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with regional growth, including the need for housing, infrastructure, and skilled workers. The article concludes by highlighting the importance of political representation for regional Australia and the potential for regional areas to play a significant role in the nation's development, particularly in the context of transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
