- Title
Nested nationalism: Making and unmaking nations in the Soviet Caucasus.
- Abstract
The Soviet Union's guiding vision of dual assimilation was a phased process that began by assimilating all of the disparate cultural communities of its population into the titular nations of each republic and would set the stage for the ultimate assimilation of these nations into a single, unified political community bonded through the shared ideal of socialism and the ultimate realisation of a communist state. Nested Nationalism re-examines Soviet politics through experiences and perspectives of the subaltern, nontitular minorities that were subject to the greatest pressures to assimilation.
