- Title
Kaplan's Approach to Prayer Appreciated and Challenged.
- Authors
Caplan, Eric
- Abstract
The article looks at the religious thought and writings of Jewish theologian Mordecai M. Kaplan, with a particular focus on his approach to prayer and liturgy. According to the author, Kaplan believed that prayer was a vital element in religion's ability to motivate worshipers to work for a new and just world order. It is suggested, however, that Kaplan's theology did not support the notion of a God powerful enough to guarantee the victory of good over evil. Details related to Kaplan's views on intellectual honesty, the adoration of God, and the role of prayer in thanksgiving and dealing with adversity are presented. It is also suggested that in order to promote social activism, synagogues should sponsor service projects and discussions rather than relying on prayer.
