- Abstract
The article focuses on the public reading of the Bible during religious ceremonies and how those images contribute to a portrait of the complex relationship between the Bible and the Church in contemporary Christianity. In the Gospel of Luke Jesus Christ reads scripture in Nazareth. The text in Luke presents a model for thinking about the authority of scripture in the modern world. The author examines whether the biblical text that was read by a first century Jewish community in Nazareth has the same meaning when it is read or heard by other communities in different times and locations.
