- Title
The President as High Priest: A Contemporary Case of Civil Religion.
- Authors
McGuire, Meranie
- Abstract
In his paper Civil Religion in America, Robert Bellah considers the American public faith through his "American Israel" framework. By evaluating inaugural addresses and other major speeches, the President's role as a priestly figure is cemented in this review of the historical origins and evolution of the American civil religion. This essay expands on Bellah's foundation by analyzing President Trump's inauguration speech and comparing it with those of former presidents. In doing so, it considers a change in presidential rhetoric over time. According to Bellah's standard, President Trump's maverick behavior rejects and opposes the central ambition of civil religion in America.
