The article explores the development of the widening gulf between the critical reputation and popular fame of playwright and novelist Somerset Maugham. Topics covered include the commercial success of the novel "The Moon and Sixpence," the criticism he received for avoiding the depths of human emotion and psychology and his ethical earnestness that was evident in his 1938 autobiography.
