- Abstract
The aim of this study was to conduct a content analysis of the first chapter of four high school biology textbooks, which typically discusses what biology is and how it works. This research used a mixed-methods content analysis technique to analyze high school biology textbooks, using a conceptual framework of four themes of the nature of science: (a) science as a body of knowledge, (b) science as a way of thinking, (c) science as a way of investigating, and (d) the interaction of science, technology, and society. In addition to the quantitative analysis with the four themes of the nature of science, a qualitative analysis was undertaken in an attempt to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the nature of science. The study found that most of high school biology textbooks reflect a reasonably balanced treatment of the four themes of the nature of science. The authors of most of U.S. high school biology textbook are attempting to convey the idea with regard to the nature of science by engaging student investigation and thinking process of scientists. Examination using a qualitative analysis reveals that each textbook has described the nature of science in considerably different manner. The approaches and emphases used to present scientific enterprise are different in each textbook. Therefore, the mixed-methods content analysis approach provided a new perspective and more comprehensive interpretations regarding the nature of science.
