- Abstract
The Ottoman Empire, which has taken its organizational structure mostly from the Turkish- Islamic tradition, has built its education system in this way and founded religious and scholarly institutions almost everywhere it has. In the 16th century, as a result of the Ottoman Empire's understanding of education, formal and non-formal education instituons such as schools, madrasahs, mosques were established in Adıyaman which was under of Ottoman rule. This study aimed to determine the educational institutions in Adıyaman in the 18th century, their functioning and the situation of the officials in these institutions. In the 18th century educational activities in the Adıyaman were tried to be determined on the basis of Hurufat registers, and other archival documents and research-study related to the subject were also used. The researches and examinations showed that school and madrasa education had developed in the Hısn-ı Mansur and Behisni provinces but it hadn't developed in Gerger, Kahta, and Samsad in the 18th century. It is understood that the education institutions in the Hısn-ı Mansur and Behisni are not very large in quality and quantity. In addition, especially, it has been seen that in the first half of the 18th century, there were significant disruptions and deterioration in educational activities and educational institutions.
