- Abstract
This article discusses the depiction of Brazil and the New World as a utopian paradise in 16th century literature, including "Terra de Vera Cruz," by Pedro Alvares Cabral. The author comments on the representation of Brazilian indigenous culture, mythology, and belief systems, as studied by historian Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. She also considers the incorporation of both historical and fictional elements in many of these works.
