- Abstract
Some studies have been conducted regarding women in Ottoman Empire. In addition to studies conducted based on kadi (muslim judge) records, sources such as şer'iyye (court) records, fatwa sources, estate, judgement, complaint and foundation records were used in studies based on legal sources. Number of studies examining directly non-muslim women is quite little. This study investigated practice of non-muslim women regarding the use of kadi (muslim judge) court in Sofia. Non-muslim women went to the Ottoman court for numerous subjects such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, bail, alimony, buying-selling, receivables and payables. While muslim women generally carried out their transactions in the court with help of a proxy, non-muslim women preferred to directly use the court.
