- Abstract
Formaldehyde is a major pollutant in indoor air and long-term exposure to formaldehyde even at very low concentrations is harmful. Efficient and low-cost elimination of low-concentration formaldehyde is the difficulty and key to improve indoor air quality. Here, active Ca-alginate gel (ACA) was prepared by embedding active components in plant extracts and used as fillers of purifiers to eliminate low-concentration formaldehyde in ambient air. When the formaldehyde concentration in air was 0.081–0.328 mg/m3 and the residence time was 0.13 s, the removal efficiency of formaldehyde by ACA was up to 87.88–98.41%. After continuous using for 65 h, removal efficiency still reached 66.47–79.71% with the formaldehyde concentration in the outlet air of 0.04–0.08 mg/m3. The removal ability of ACA filler to formaldehyde in the air was up to 1515.4 mg/h/kg, corresponding to a maximum air purification capacity of 6000 m3/h/kg based on the dry weight of Na-alginate material. The free radical produced by the cascade reaction between plant active components and oxygen in the air played a key role in formaldehyde removal by ACA. With the advantages of low-cost, high-efficiency, and easy production, new bioactive material has great application potential in the deep purification of formaldehyde in the air.
