- Abstract
There are some reports in the literature of cognitive impairments associated with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Hence, early diagnosis is important for preventing cognitive damage. The aim of the study was to assess the cognition in HIV-infected individuals aged 50 years or more and its associations with sociodemographic and clinical variables. This is a cross-sectional study, which adopted convenience sampling. 52 individuals participated in the study (61.5% women) who were treated at a Specialized HIV/AIDS Service from Francisco Beltrão/PA Brazil. Demographic data, CD4+ cells count, HIV viral load, antiretroviral therapy, gait speed, and income were analyzed. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE), verbal fluency test (VF), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were used to assess cognition. 44.2% of the participants had changes in the MMSE, 26.9% in the VF, and 11.5% in the GDS. It was noted that high income was associated with a higher VF and with higher scores on the MMSE, as well as with a lower depression score. No correlations were found between other variables with cognitive impairment. We concluded that, in the present sample, clinical characteristics linked to HIV were not associated with cognitive deficits.
