- Abstract
Objectives: to describe the nurses' performance in providing prenatal care for women in the prison system; to identify difficulties of nurses in providing prenatal care for those incarcerated. Method: integrative review to answer the research question « What is the nurse's role in providing prenatal care for imprisoned women and the difficulties found in achieving this goal? ». The data were collected from the databases LILACS and MEDLINE, the virtual library SciELO and the World Health Organization (WHO) publications indexed in the period from 2006 to 2014. We selected 78 studies but only 18 met the inclusion criteria. Results: three categories were identified: "Profile of imprisoned women"; « "Nursing appointment as a humanized measure during prenatal care" »;« "Precarious health care conditions of imprisoned pregnant woman" ». Conclusion: although there are public policies aimed at the incarcerated population, these are far from achieving their goals because although the rights of the convicted population are guaranteed by law, in practice they are not respected.
