- Abstract
The article traces the roots of Maimonidean thinking on the rediscovery of monotheism by Abraham, from postbiblical literature through rabbinic midrash. The characterization of Abraham by Jewish Hellenistic authors, Philo and Josephus is described. Common motifs concerning the call of Abraham are cited. The importance of correctly defining the word birah for the proper understanding of the Genesis Rabbah is also addressed.
