- Abstract
The article examines the portrayal of female African-American domestic laborers in fiction, based on the books "The Street," by Ann Petry, and "Like One of the Family: Conversations From a Domestic's Life," by Alice Childress. It describes how the female characters embody the process of refraction when confronting racial, gender and class inequities. It also explains how the protagonists expose and critique the conduct of those who condone the marginalization of African Americans.
