Presented is an essay that addresses topics related to queer theory, gay activism, the spread of AIDS in the U.S., and the interrelatedness of sexuality and gender. Historical analysis of American cultural politics and the modern gay liberation movement is provided. The author states that in the 21st century gays and lesbians in Western countries, primarily the U.S., have focused much of their societal demands for equality based on inclusion in the status quo.
