- Title
Closet-Dwellers of the Mind.
- Authors
Bergman, David
- Abstract
The author discusses the idea that movies and television show straight people accepting of homosexuality and gay men not being able to deal with their sexuality. As an example, an episode of "Six Feet Under" is described in which a gay son comes out to his family and nobody becomes homophobic. Another example is the film "Big Eden" where an entire small-town community in Montana accepts the gay and lesbian characters, but the two main characters, gay men, are having a difficult time with a relationship. The author asserts that these scenes imply homophobia only exists in the minds of gay people, who are paranoid because of a maladjustment. A Michael Cunningham novel, "A Home at the End of the World," is mentioned as another fantasy world of acceptance.
