- Title
JEWISH INTERMARRIAGE AND MARRIAGE TO CONVERTS: THE RELIGIOUS FACTOR AND THE ETHNIC FACTOR.
- Authors
Lavender, Abraham D.
- Abstract
The article examines the religious and ethnic factors involved in Jewish intermarriage and marriage to converts in the U.S. It explores the concerns over intermarriage among the minority group and measures the attitudes that are favorable to intermarriage. By using the ethnic and religious definitions of Jewishness, the Jewish individuals who marry a convert and those who would intermarry with non-converts, were compared. The measures of Jewish identity used in the study were a Religious Observance Index and an Ethnic Identity Index. Results show that the willingness to intermarry is related both to the levels of religious identity and ethnic identity, but the relationship is stronger for religious identity.
